using s_src & s_subsrc in an email message

Options

I just sent out an ab test on an email message - two variants testing different subject lines. I also wanted to test what links were clicked more often and which links had a higher conversion. In the convio documentation, it says:

Source Codes and Email

It is important to understand that Convio is already creating a source code for actions that originate from

an email message which was sent using Convio’s Email Campaign tools. You should not add the

“s_src=” argument to any link inside of an email message because this will override the Convio source

code which is automatically set to be the name of the email message. The best way to take advantage of

source codes within Email Campaigns, is to utilize the “s_subsrc=” argument to set a sub-source code.

So, in both variants I only added s_subsrc codes to the different links. When I ran my advocacy respondent report all the people who had a subsource that I created did not have a source - the name of the email message did not show in the source column - so I couldn't tell which variant of the email they came from. I'm interested in finding out what links give us a higher conversion rate.

Does this mean I also have to add a s_src=XXX &s_subsrc=YYY to all the links instead of just the s_subsrc=YYY?

  • I asked the developer, who replied:

&s_subsrc=YYY is good enough. It'll simply record the src as blank and subsrc as YYY. So if that's the desired behavior, that'll work.

On further reflection, he refined his answer to:

use a different value for s_subsrc=for each link.
