Parent Interests

Options
Hi everyone,

I've read the Knowledgebase article on creating a family of interests (https://search.blackbaud.com/?_ga=2.59430829.1431020031.1606845397-1056643070.1604004608#q=parent%20interest&t=All) but it's unclear to me if a parent interest should be associated with an email campaign. If it can, and someone opts out of that parent interest, can they still receive child interests?

More concretely: I've created a "Foster volunteer communications" parent interest -- which we intend to use for general updates from our foster team-- as well as child interests for cat and dog fosters (those will be associated with email campaigns about cats and dogs in need of foster, respectively). Can someone unsubscribe from "foster volunteer communications" but still receive cat or dog-specific emails?

Thank you,

Alex

  • Logged in to try to get the same question answered. The KB article seems to only focus on web interests, not email interests. We're focusing pretty heavily on getting our email practices restructured this year, and I'm wondering if I should include parent interests in my plan.
  • Okay, so I did some testing with a fake account - it doesn't look like the parent interests and child interests interact with each other terribly much. Opting in to a parent interest doesn't automatically opt you into child interests, and being unsubscribed from a parent interest doesn't affect the subscription to a child interest. While I don't know your specific situation, I would say that it probably isn't going to hurt anything if you associate a parent interest with an email campaign.
  • Yes, that's right. I added some jQuery to our user facing form to make that happen ages ago. Otherwise it's just confusing. Still we didn't really find much use for the parent interests.
