Storing goals/using KPIs for designations

Options
We have setup our purpose and designations to be one to one at the recommendation of Blackbaud.  How are others using OOB functionality to roll-up multiple designations/purposes to one goal/KPI.  We currently do NOT use the hierarchy for designations/purposes.

For example, Varsity Baseball has a goal of $1.0 mil for FY20.  There are several designations that roll-up to the overall Varsity baseball goal.  We do not want to set the goal at the individual designation level.

    We created custom designation attributes (with a hierarchy) that allows us to create goals for sets of designations, and for sub-sets, too. It was based on a designation attribute hierarchy we had created in Banner before conversion. We've been using this in CRM for 5 years now, and it works well for us; we found it invaluable when reporting for our most recent campaign.
