Gmail & the Promotions Tab

Options
Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to force emails to be delivered to the general inbox rather than the "Promotions" tab/section in Gmail?

Thanks,

  • From my understanding, Google uses its own algorithms to determine where an incoming email should go, and it's based on all kinds of potential factors - deliverability, spam ratings, subject lines, body copy, images, etc. In other words, no, you can't force gmail to place your email in the inbox.

If you really want to avoid the promotions tab, you can ask email recipients to add your email address to their contacts or to move the emails from their promotion tab to their inbox (giving google the hint that future emails should go there) but of course there's the challenge of properly communicating these steps to your recipients and actually getting them to follow through.
  • Thanks Daryl!
  • Daryl is right, but those factors are things you can influence. There's a bazillion sites about this.

A big one that got us in the past was not keeping the house file clean. A newish thing that happens now is that Gmail and the other big vendors will convert formerly good, but now abandoned email accounts into spam honeypots. If you continue to email to those accounts your sender reputation suffers. So now it's more important than ever to set up a system to remove constituents that have not opened within XX days.
