PayPal options in Luminate Online

Options
For those of you that offer PayPal as an option for your donors, how are you receiving the donor information and specific designation information for each gift back from PayPal?

  • Hi Sarah,

LO should have all that information. A constituent record gets created/updated when a PayPal donation is made. The only info PayPal has is the first name, last name, email and donation amount.

You are still getting all the info through a LO donation form.

Our finance team just reconciles the amounts when they do a disbursement.

Is that what you are asking?

    Thanks,

    Phil
  • How do we enable PayPal as an option?
  • When I set this up 3 years ago, I worked with the Blackbaud Merchant Services team. They have a guide you need to follow and then they will turn it on site-wide, so be ready for that. At the time I was informed the PayPal option would only appear on donation forms I enabled the PayPal option on, but when the switch was flipped, it was live everywhere. Nothing bad happened, I had just wanted to test it a little more once we went live.

The first step is that and then contacting PayPal to setup a Business Account, if you don't already have one. Don't forget to give them your EIN number for a lower rate on transactions.

It took about a month to work through everything. PayPal takes a minute and then you do some setup, but then BB flips the switch and you are good.

You will need to manually disperse your funds from PayPal.

Happy to help if you have any other questions.

We were amazed at how many constituents used PayPal once we gave them the option.

    Thanks,

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

Would you mind sharing - if you know - if getting the PayPal option turned on cost your org a fee?

    Thanks in advance (:3

    Tonya

  • Hi Tonya,

There is no fee to turn it on. You just need to walk through all the steps.

The only fee that PayPal takes when processing the transaction. I think the nonprofit rate is like 2.2% + $0.20/transaction.

    Thanks,

    Phil
  • Hello all - resurrecting this terrific thread with some follow up questions.

Our LO is integrated with RE. How do LO transactions paid with Paypal look in the RE plugin? Can anyone give me a redacted screenshot?

In the disbursement process, what do the PayPal funds look like? Do the include the donors name, or just "paypal"? What is the timing of disbursement?

    Thank you!

    -Kelly
  • Hi Kelly,

You have to go into PayPal and disburse the funds to yourself. So typically we do a download of activity for a certain time period in PayPal, total up the amount (minus fees) and initiate a bank transfer for that amount in PayPal.

In the Relo Plugin, under the Gift Information field, PayPal will be listed on last line (where CC type is currently).

    P.S. It's worth it.
