Processing online gifts from BBNC

Options
We have started getting online pledges and recurring gifts for our capital campaign. This is new territory for me (and I've worked with RE for over 15 years!...crazy I know).  After I processed the gifts in the BBNC plugin and opened the gift batch, I noticed that the Pledges had a gift method of "Credit Card".  Well we normally code our pledges as "Other" so I changed it. But then I noticed after commiting the batch that it looks like I've lost the credit card information off of those pledges. Any way I can get that information back without actually having to call the donors?  I feel like an idiot.

  • While I don't have any specific experience with BBNC, I'm going to guess that the answer is no. The reason is that PCI compliciance standards dictate that a credit card number cannot be accessed in an unhashed format (hashed = ************1234). Period. Now, someone somewhere at Blackbaud can most likely pull this information out, but if there is a method for requesting this data, it will be pretty cumbersome, and it might not exist.

Maybe contact your sales rep to see if there's any way to make this happen? That's the best I can think of.

Sorry. Learning is sometimes terrible :(
  • Hi Julie,

If you will be processing these monthly recurring gifts or recurring gifts, may I ask why you need the credit card information still, and I likely might be missing something here?  I use the BBMS EFT plug in, and when I automatically generate transactions, all my recurring gifts populate the batch, and when I create new EFT transmission files each month, the credit card information though masked, gets processed through BBMS.  I'm not sure how BBNC works, but do you think it might be similar?
  • Brenda - I don't have a ton of experience with this, but I do use BBMS. I'm fairly sure that the credit card info that comes into your recurring gift batch lives within the originating BBMS recurring gift. I think that in Julie's case, by changing the payment type to Other in the batch when the gifts originated, she lost that info and so can't use RE to generate these recurring gifts in the future.

But that brings up a good point - Julie, do BBNC gifts get processed from within RE, or are you just recording transactions that have already completed elsewhere into RE through some kind of connector? If you're just bringing in completed transactions, then your problem is pretty minimal. You just lost some extraneous data on one iteration of these gifts.
  • Okay, having learned the same lesson the same hard way, I may have some other advice for you here, but yes, you will need to contact the donors to get that information back.

When a person enters a pledge into BBNC, and you pull it across into RE, it has NOT been charged yet.  (You appear to already know this, but just trying to be thorough.)  You need the EFT module to process it since you can't see (or get) the card number - it is hidden from us thanks to PCI compliance.  You have to leave the payment method - in the Pledge itself - as Credit Card and the EFT box checked.  (Side note - if you do not have the EFT module, you should stop, immediately, accepting credit card pledges through BBNC.  Since the credit card numbers are hidden from us, you would have no way to actually get the number to charge it any other way without contacting the donors.)  You would then do an EFT type gift batch, pull in your pledge payment(s) to be charged, do the charging process, and commit the gift(s).  If you need help with EFT batches, I know there are some references online, but I also have a procedure document that I might be able to share.

Is it just your pledge gift records that are payment type other or do you also record your payments as other??
