Media Type - changing values

The Media Type drop down lists types of PDF, Word Document, etc. and we wanted to repurpose this to be things like: Gift Agreement, Scholarship, etc.  I tested this by creating the new Media Type of Gift Agreement and added a new media item and was able to open it.  I searched the knowledgebase and couldn't find anything in it about changing the values.


I was curious though if the Media Type mattered and was used to associate the correct type to launch the right application.  It didn't seem to be an issue, but I wanted to check with all of you to see if you were aware of any issues with this approach.


We are hosted and we use NXT, however, we currently add media via RE so that it is available both places.

Media Type is a Field based on a configurable Table.  Go to: RE7 > Config > Tables > Media Type.  Edit as you would with any other table, to end up with the values you want (Gift Agreement, Scholarship, etc.).  This has nothing to do with the program used to open the file.  Your computer will choose the appropriate program based on the file extension (i.e. pdf, xls, doc, etc.).  The options you currently see (PDF, Word Document, etc.) are options someone at your org added to the table at some point in time.


One thing to note: if you add a Media Type option via Attachment Tags in NXT, that option will not appear in your RE7 table.  Nor can you (at this time) edit or delete options you have added to the table via NXT...because you can't yet access Tables in NXT.
