Recording an estate gift from a deceased constituent

Options
One of our donors is setting up and endowed scholarship using a gift from his deceased wife's estate. The check is written on an estate check, "Jane Doe Revocable Trust".  what is best practice for recording this gift? Our donor was clear that this is not his money but his deceased wife's.

  • That is what I came up with too but glad someone else sees it that way. Thanks for your response :)

  • Same as Mercedes - if the money is coming from an actual estate and the executor has sent along all the Planned Giving documents, we create an Organization record "Estate of ________".

It depends on your country's tax receipting laws governing estates, too.  At least in Canada, once the constituent has died, they cease to be an Individual, their Estate is now an entity with assets - similar to being incorporated as a business.  :)  So if the cheque is from the Estate, you have to receipt the Estate.  If the family sends you money that isn't an Estate cheque, they may be using the receipt to finalize the deceased's Estate in its final year of filing as an Indiv.

    Does that make sense?
