Total Giving

Has anyone found a way to get total giving from two married constituents that is acuate?  The only way I have found is to do Soft Credit Gifts to Donor and do the Summary total gift amount for the consitituent and for the spouse export it into excel and add them there.   When I do Sof Credit Gifts to Both  and no matter what I use fromthe drop down I can't get the correct amount.   This only works if every one of their gifts has a soft credit to their spouse.   But I have people who have given before they got married or constituent that don't want their spouse soft credited on certain gifts and that is when you cannot get the correct total giving using the way RE has it set up.   It really makes things hard when we can't run a simple query to find our alums with a total giving of $5000 or more when you can't get the true total giving on our couples.

I struggle with this as well, espcially for alumni that are married to each other!  One work-around possibly is Soft Crediting to Both in the Query & Export, but in the Export, use the HOH processing to export out only constituents marked HOH.  This will give you an accurate giving total for each alumni in the couple - it will include all soft credits attached to both but at least will not double the giving total.  If you are looking for total number of donors, the alumni spouse must be counted in some how if you go this route with the HOH processing.

I would love to hear any other ideas others have used in this situation.  Soft credits can really impact what you are reporting and it can get confusing at times to know if you are including all gifts you want to count in the donor's total without duplicating amounts.

We pull Constit Giving and Spousal giving into the export and  then add once exported.

We use "soft credit to donor" so that gifts soft credited to the spouse are included in their giving and not in the constit's.  Gifts not soft credited are just included in the respective total. Once totalled it's a picture of the household.  The only time this doesn't work is when both spouses are soft credited (as from a donor advised fund) as then the gift is double counted, but we can usually catch these and fix as needed.

  • You can just export the head of household record and make sure that you include soft credits.RE handles this very nicely.
