alternative to SmartPaste??

Options
Twice now, I think within a year's time, my computer has been infected by the SmartPaste tool. (This is with a tremendous IT department behind the scenes protecting our system.)  I have a feeling my IT folks are not going to take lightly to my desire to keep the SmartPaste tool. Are there any alternatives out there???

  • I had to go look up what SmartPaste is/does.  But I'm not finding that it does anything not already possible directly in RE.

Select your list of Constituent IDs from Excel > open the One Of window in RE Query > scroll down one click in the vertical scroll bar > select a row > Ctrl+V to paste > OK > voila! your list of IDs is in the Query.  You can only paste up to 500 records/IDs into one line of Criteria, but you can easily add additional Criteria lines with the OR operator to get more records when necessary.

If SmartPaste does something more, I'd be interested to know (although maybe not if it's going to crash my system).
  • I used to really like SmartPaste. When I got a new computer and had to quickly get some queries done without it, I learned that it's actually faster to create queries from a list of IDs manually. Just select the Constituent ID, set operator to "One of", scroll to the very bottom of the data entry area, and paste up to 500 IDs into the very last cell. It will accept all 500. If you need to do more than 500, paste the first 500 in, then add the Constituent ID to the query again (it'll default to an OR separator), and paste the next 500. I've done this with tens of thousands of records. While it's not as easy to do it this way as with SmartPaste, it's actually quite a bit faster.
  • I'm more that a little confused about how SmartPaste could be responsible for "infecting" your system, but Jen and Jason have both given you the best alternative.
