Givalanche

Options
We are just starting to use Givalanche and I need to prove that it's working properly.

On the Online Express dashboard in RE you can see a Top Givalanches report. How do you see all of the Givalanches? Can you query on that? Can you export a report from the OE dashboard that shows all of them?

Also, if someone starts a Givalanche and someone gives a gift and then they share it with someone else and the person they shared it with gives a gift it should be 2 Givalanches or is it the same Givalanche? How does a new Givalanche happen?

We are just testing it and if someone has used it for an actual appeal would you be willing to talk to me and tell if how it's working for you? Or if someone from Blackbaud is reading this and can answer my questions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for any answers to these questions.

  • Hi Karen,

At the top right of the Top Givalanches section in Online Express, you can click the "Export CSV" link, which will give you a list of all of your Givalanches in CSV format.

When you process transactions into RE, Online Express adds some special gift attributes if that gift is part of a Givalanche. This means that you can query on these gift attributes:
    • Givalanche ID: The unique ID of this gift
    • Givalanche Parent ID: The unique ID of the gift which was shared and directly led to this gift
    • Givalanche Root ID: The unique ID of the gift which started the whole Givalanche
A new Givalanche is started when someone makes a gift and shares it. If someone clicks on a shared Givalanche link and then makes a gift, their gift is added onto the existing Givalanche (it does not create a new Givalanche). So for the example that you provided, all three gifts would count under the same Givalanche (the original gift, the gift after the original donor shared, and the gift after the second donor shared).

    Did this answer your questions?
  • Thanks for the reply. I am seeing and understanding everything you say, but not all of the gifts processed through the Givalanche link are showing up with a Parent ID or a Root ID. I'm going to do some more testing today to see what happens. More later.

  • The problem is that the first time the Givalanche is shared the parent and root ID show up on the gift so that you can track it. When the second person then shares the Givalanche and that person makes a gift there is no tracking information. I'm working with support on this issue.
  • We have not really had any Givalanches. I am curious to hear from other people whether this is a common issue?
  • Karen-

We had a simliar issue (I think) to yours regarding the linking of gifts to the actual Givealanche. We discovered that our website would strip the coding that's required to track the gifts coming in. So that means a gift would come in and we would have no idea if it was a Givealanche gift, or just a regular donation. You might want to check out your website's secutiry settings for things like that.
  • Thanks, I think that through much testing we've discovered that it becomes unlinked when it's shared through the email link. I've been working with support on the issue.

I am renewing my efforts to use Givealanch.  I'm wondering if you have figured out a solution to this problem?

Please post an update.   Thank you.

We found Givealanche to have too many bugs and issues so we decided not to use the module, so I don't think we ever solved it. We just found it too fussy with enough problems to be more of a headache than it was worth.

  • We haven't used it again, but may try it out this year. It frankly hasn't really been worth the bother.
  • Yesterday we started using Givalanche on our "Santa Project" donation page to test it out.  It worked fine when a donor shared it through Facebook from their computer, however, the next two donors who clicked on the first donor's link in Facebook and made a donation tried to share it selecting the Facebook button, one on an iPhone and one on an iPad, and neither were able to make that work. It was very frustrating for them - they were excited to keep the Givalanche going.

I tried testing it from an iPhone and nothing happened the first few times I pressed the Facebook button.  The third time a screen came up with Open and Share.  Neither of these options worked.  I'm wondering if this is a bug or if there is something we can do to make it work.
  • Hi everyone. I know it's been several months since you guys last discussed the Givalanche. Has this been updated? We're anxious to start using it.

    Thanks!
