NC and RE Constituents

I understand that in Netcommunity to e-mail mother and father each needs their own record. However, in RE we would like only one constituent record with either the father as the constituent with the mother a relationship or vice versa. Since each has a record in NC we can not merge them in RE. Does anyone else have this issue? If so, how have you handled it? Thank you!
