Using solicit codes vs. attributes

We use the solicit codes, and enter the reason in the Notes tab.  We created a note type called "Solicit Code Explanation".  However, in the past it wasn't used consistently (it is now).  It's simply of matter of who is doing the data entry and how well the procedures are enforced.  It is frustrating to find a solicit code such as "Do Not Contact" or "Do Not Mail" which was probably entered years ago and there is no reason why!

I've instituted several quality control attributes: donor source, deceased info source, do not solicit reason, mail returned description, mailing list removal reason. Each one has a drop-down list so that information is entered consistently and is easy to query for follow-up actions. In the past we've had people marked deceased, who weren't deceased, no way of tracking where our constituents came from, and mail returned from addresses that were still valid. I also keep attributes to indicate the date a record was last changed or appended with age, peoplesearch, phone appends, etc.
