Additional ID Field?

Options

We are issuing new membership cards here at the Museum. A new number displaying only the card number will be added to it. For the near future, the Constituent ID number will also appear on the card. The long term goal is to remove the Constituent ID from the card altogether. The current thinking is that a lost card will not permit anyone who has possession of  the card entrance to the Museum.

Here's the catch - this new Card ID Number will need to be stored on each members record in Raiser's Edge. It must be searchable from an as yet unknown new software/hardware system in order to obtain the cardholder's record in RE giving membership status and category, etc.

Has anyone else done anything similar? I need suggestions as to where to store this new number in Raiser's Edge.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

If you have the Membership module in Raiser's Edge, why not use the 'Membership ID' field? Other than that, you can create a new 'Alias' for this ID.

    I recommend the Alias field.

Patrick and Tracie - Thank you both, using Alias sounds like a good idea. It's critical that I be able to import the first 10,000 or so card numbers to get started and judging by the Knowledgebase this appears feasible. In addition, the card #/alias must be searchable and report-able, and this too appears feasible. Thanks for the help. Steven
