Do memberships drop automatically? Or am I confused?

Greetings all! I am experiencing what (to me) is a bug. On the "renewal information" tab, there is a field for "drop this membership after XX months." To me, this means the software automatically sets a membership to 'dropped' after the correct time has elapsed. For some reason, this is not happening. Do I really have to do a manual global drop every month? If so, what the heck is the point of that field? I've crawled all over the web and can't find any answers. HELP!! Thanks!

     It's not something that just happens in the background automatically -- I have to run "Dropped Lapsed Members" from admin.
