individuals who want to receive mail at multiple addresses
hello RE gurus!
we have a few records in our db who would like to receive mail at more than one address. they're not seasonal addresses, they actually have two residences to which they would like each mail piece sent.
can anyone recommend a graceful solution to this...?
many thanks in advance!

A graceful solution? [:D]
I don't know anyway that Mail function would include 2 pieces for same record.
How are you generating your mailing lists? In query, export? I'm can't think of any way even with special solicit code/attribute to have Export pull 2 for the same record - basically against what it's designed to do. Seems like it would have to be a two-step process to pull primary list and then records needing additional mailing in separate Export with some kind of address type/attribute/coding to query on. .
Maybe another user will have an idea...

HI
We create a second record for the donor and have a HUGE pop-up note on it that second record is for social invites only and all other information should go on record # xyz.

Laura Rogers:
But how on earth do you determine that the second record meets the criteria for the mailing? Often my mailings are based on last gift date/amount and the second would not have all of that so it would not be pulled into the mailing query. I think JoAnn's suggestion was closer to what I would recommend since you can use all of the data on the main record to determine if the person should even get the mailing.HI

We have many donor who are seasonal so we have mulitple addresses on a record. We have address types of Local, Non-Local, Business, and Former. We do not use the Home address type because we need to have a better idea of where the mail is going. When we do a invitation mailing, we mail to all valid addresses (with the send mail checked) on each record that meets the mailing criteria. After using a query to group my constituents, I then use the Export to get the final mailing list in Excel with all of the different addresses.
Maybe you can create another address type for their secondary home.

We have various address types also. Maybe I'm having a really blonde day, but I don't see, Dawn, how you're getting two records to pull in your export. Even if you tell it to export 99 addresses per each record, it's still one record for the mailing wth 99 address fields.
Do you pull two records in Export?

I could easily be having a blonde moment too [:)] If I understood the question correctly, Beth wasn't asking about two seperate records for the constituents with multiple addresses but was asking how to handle mailing to multiple addresses for each constituent.
Someone else suggested creating a second constituent record for the second address but as Melissa stated, this would make it difficult when having to meet certain criteria that is on the other record.

I get what you are saying but I think Joann is right.
If you are using the export and mail merging from it - even if you have multiple addresses in separate columns for one person (one row) the mail merge is still only going to give you one envelope/letter/label for each person/row. You would have work to do to mail merge a second set of envelopes/letters/labels for anyone with an address in the second set of address columns - which is nearly the same amount of work as JoAnn presented where you simply export anyone with this additional address type into a separate export and creating separate envelopes/letters/labels.
six of one. half dozen of the other.

thanks so much for the responses, everyone!
it sounds like we're all thinking along the same lines... create another address type to manage them in RE and then either do a second export for just those address types, or do a bunch of post-export fidgeting around in excel to move the second addresses into one column.
either way, sounds super-fun, no...? [:S]

I would be sure to make coding or address type very clear. We have number of records with second valid address and I sure wouldn't want to have to filter through all of them for the ones to get 2 mailing pieces. I would want it very clear so all those doing data entry know that's just what add type/attribute/code is for and one that can be easily filtered on to pull the additions to the mailing.
