Pledges Under one constituent and Payments under another

Options
We have a pledge that was booked under an individual constituent but they are making payments through a foundation who we also have a profile for. My predecessor was able to book the pledge payment under the foundation, soft credit it to the individual and still get it to adjust the balance on the individual's profile. When I go to enter the recent payment under the foundation's profile I can't seem to get it to adjust the balance off the individual's profile even when I soft credit it to the individual. Maybe there was something done when the pledge was entered to make the two profiles work hand in hand. If my description is confusing then consider this as an example: A pledge for 5k was entered under John Doe's profile John Doe is making payments through ABC Foundation who also has a profile My predecessor entered a payment of $2,500 under ABC foundation and soft credited it to John Doe which adjusted his current pledge balance to $2,500 The gift type shows up on ABC Foundation's profile as "Pay-Cash" and on John Doe's profile as "Pay Cash-SC" When I go to enter the new payment of $2,500 and soft credit it to John Doe the gift type only shows up as "Cash" for ABC Foundation and "Cash-SC" for John Doe If I only enter the gift under John Doe to adjust the balance it throws off all the previous credit that was given to ABC Foundation PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks in advance

    Guy,

Soft-crediting does not affect the pledge balance in any way.  When you enter the payment, you need to apply it against the pledge.  If the gift is not posted you may still be able to apply it.  Go to gift and click the icon for applying (looks like two sheets of paper).  Choose the pledge.  If gift is posted and you need it to be applied, I think you'll need to adjust to $0 and re-enter the payment.

Does that make sense?  If you have questions, post again.

    Guy,

Just another thing to muddy the waters, you may wish to search forums for post on personal/family foundations.  For some types there are restrictions against the foundation $ being used to pay a personal pledge.  Just FYI...

To apply a pledge payment on one record to a pledge on another you have an extra step to do. You will have to open the payment, select apply to pledge and then at the bottom use the "load pledges from" button. this will allow you to search for the record where the pledge lives.

Also be sure you are legally doing this properly. There is a way to do this in RE but that does not mean it is always appropriate to do so. You need the permission of the Foundation to apply the gift to the personal pledge. It is most often considered "self dealing" when a foundation pays the individual pledge debts of an individual who has a significant role with the foundaiton so the foundation must be knowledgeable that you are doing this so they do not get into trouble with the IRS.

That was exactly what I was looking to do. Thank you very much and yes we are doing this legally.
