credit card post date

On credit card gifts from the web, is it better to use the date the donor ran their card or the settlement date from the 3rd party credit card management company (ours is Greater Giving).  We find issues with both and wonder what others find works best.

Thanks,

Depends on the 3rd party company.

    • If it is a 501 c 3 you are using (like Network for Good, etc) then it would be a gift from the Organization on the day it is deposited to the account and the individuals can only get soft credit.
    • If a for profit company that you have contracted with to accept your donations, then it would be the date the gift was charged per IRS rules.

If you do not know which you are dealing with, call them.

Thank you.  That is most helpful.
